| General information | Parking is restricted, but there are eight Blue Badge spaces off Hpton Street, which can be reserved in advance. The Blue Badge spaces are by the building wall, just to the right of the long ramp, and you get to them through a barrier. There's an intercom to alert the staff that you're there. The museum can be reached either from the South Bank Thames Walk, or across the Millennium Bridge from St Paul's. Southwark tube station, which is on the accessible Jubilee Line Extension, is about 600m away. If you come from the riverside, there is a flat entrance by the corner cafe on the ground floor(Level2). This is also the easiest one to use from the Blue Budge spaces, via the walkway over the long ramp. At the West Entrance, there is a long wide slope down to the bottom level with steps and a handrail down the right hand side. At this lower level, there are the ticket offices for special exhibitions, and just inside the doors to the left there is an infromation point. You can get a gallery plan there, and an access leaflet. The plan takes a little getting used to. Four lifts go to all floors, but these can get quite busy. There are escalations as an alternative. Although step free, the galleries are around 180m long and some 40m wide, so if you go to more than one level, there can be long distances involved as there is only one block of lifts. A wheelchair can be borrowed if you need one, and there are benches scattered throughout the galleries. There are many interesting and provocative exhibits. The descriptions of various exhibits are sometimes not designed for someone who is even slightly visually impaired, and some are not at a very friendly height for a chair user. There are accessible toilets on most levels, adjacent to the main toilet blocks. There are also accessible toilets in the special exhibition areas, but hese are very discreetly signed, and it's easiest to ask a staff member. The Side Transfer space is blocked by a large bin in most of the toilets. There are three cafes, on Level 2, Level 4 and Level 7. In the one on Level 4 the counters are quite high. From the top floor, there's an outside balcony/gallery giving some fine views, but recently the one at the City end has been closed, sevely limiting access. Special tours and facilities for visually impaired visitors, those with learning disabilities and those wanting to access reference materials available on request. Note the accessible Founders Arms pub on the riverside. |
