Drama/Thriller. From director Danny Boyle, award winning 'Slumdog Millionaire' tells the story of Jamal Malik - an 18-year-old orphan living on the streets of Mumbai whose life suddenly changes when he finds himself one question away from winning 20 million rupees. Arrested on suspicion of cheating and desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the powerful and dramatic story of how his life on the streets has provided him with each of the answers. "The film glides from sidesplitting comedy to gut-wrenching despair, with an honesty and subtlety that continually catches us off guard - may just be the best film you see all year".

Frost / Nixon subtitled (15) 2 hours 2 mins

The historic interview of a disgraced post-Watergate ex-President Nixon by the supposedly lightweight British chatshow host David Frost turned out to be one of the most explosive confrontations in American TV history. Michael Sheen catches the flash mannerisms of Frost while Frank Langella delivers a towering performance as Nixon, a man who finally realised it was time to come clean. Ron Howard directs Peter Morgan's razor-sharp script as a verbal boxing match. Knockout.

Milk subtitled (15) 2 hours 8 mins

Academy Award winner Sean Penn takes the title role in Gus Van Sant's biopic tracing the last eight years in the life of Harvey Milk, the ill-fated politician and gay activist whose life changed history, and whose courage still inspires people. When Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, he made history for being the first openly gay man in American history to be voted into public office. But the rights of homosexuals weren't Milk's primary concern. He fought for everyone from union workers to senior citizens, a true hero of human rights who possessed nothing but compassion for his fellow man.

IMPORTANT!

We receive accessible listings directly from cinema head offices. We take great care to ensure the listings are timely and accurate but can take NO RESPONSIBILITY for postponed or cancelled shows. Many cinemas schedules are "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION". Sometimes the files necessary for a subtitled or described film are not available, or are not delivered to the cinema on time. The only way to be 100% sure is to check with the ACTUAL cinema before you plan a visit. But DOUBLE check, preferably with a manager. We recommend that you should always request confirmation that a show is definitely on.

Latest news:

The UK leads the world in accessible cinema. Most major cinemas - including almost all Odeon and Vue cinemas - now have facilities to screen the latest films with subtitles (or captions) for people with hearing problems, and a narrated soundtrack (audio description) for people with sight problems. Most popular films are available with these 'access' features. There are more than 2,000 subtitled English language shows a month nationwide, and thousands more audio described shows. 'Accessible' shows are now a regular feature in many cinemas.

"Fact is that as we age, loss of some hearing or sight is inevitable... Access to film via subtitles & audio description is something that we all may appreciate, eventually"

About cinema subtitles & audio description.

Cinema subtitles (properly known as captions) are displayed along the bottom of the cinema screen. They include the spoken text as well as descriptions of sounds such as 'door creaks', 'footsteps approaching', 'gunshot' etc.

Cinema audio description is a recorded narration which explains - in gaps in the dialogue - what's happening on screen. It's delivered through wireless headphones - only the wearer hears the audio description soundtrack. One blind cinema-goer has likened the experience to listening to a Harry Potter audio book, but with all the actors voicing their own parts, and the addition of the film soundtrack - in fabulous surround sound.

"It's the accessible cinema experience: SEE the dialogue! HEAR the action!"

316 cinemas nationwide can screen most popular films with subtitles and audio description. Please ask your nearest subtitle-equipped cinema to screen them! Locations here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/locations.html

Many more 'subtitled' cinemas may be on the way...

Many leisure industries including TV, video, music, photo, and video games have gone digital, and the cinema industry is going digital too. Thanks to UK film distributors, most popular cinema releases are now available with digital subtitle and audio description 'files'. And thanks to the UK Film Council's 'Digital Screen Network' scheme, over 200 UK cinemas are now equipped with new digital projection equipment.

These digital projection systems have built in subtitle readers, and adaptations can be made to include audio description features too. Subtitle and audio description 'files' are readily available for many popular cinema releases and can be 'read' by digital projection systems. Some of these cinemas regularly schedule subtitled shows.

It is hoped that the access features of these digital projectors will be utilised, to enable people with hearing or sight problems to enjoy digital cinema, but there's no guarantee that it will happen. We urge organisations, groups and individuals to create total awareness of this access issue, to ensure it is addressed as soon as possible. Please contact digitally-equipped cinemas in your area and request that they utilise the built in 'access' features of digital projectors.

You can find a full list of digitally-equipped UK cinemas here:
