Martina Cole’s TWO WOMEN

Adapted for the stage by Patrick Prior

***Press Night: 24th February 2010 – 7.30pm***

Theatre Royal Stratford East presents the world premiere of Two Women – an explosive new play based on the novel by Martina Cole - one of the UK’s most popular crime writers.

After conquering the world of Television with several successful adaptations of her books including the hugely popular The Take (Sky1), Martina Cole has now turned her attention to theatre. Martina is renowned for her gritty and realistic portrayals of East London's underworld and now, for the first time ever, one of her best-selling novels is brought to the stage.

Martina Cole said: “I'm over the moon that Theatre Royal is producing the first stage adaptation of Two Women, a book which is very close to my heart. I’m a big fan of Kerry Michael and his talented team and I know it will be a fantastic production.”

Martina has achieved worldwide sales of over 8 million copies of her books with three of her most recent paperbacks going straight to the top spot on The Sunday Times bestseller list. Two of Martina Cole’s novels, Dangerous Lady and The Jump have been adapted into popular television dramas for ITV. In 2009, Sky1 screened The Take to widespread critical acclaim; the first of several adaptations of her novels which will be shown on the channel. The Runaway is currently being developed and will be screened on Sky1 in 2010.

Martina is well known for exploring tough issues through her writing, and Two Women is no different, tackling domestic abuse and women’s rights. Martina uses the plight of two starkly contrasted female characters - one born to a working class family in the East End of London during the height of gangland activity and the other a bored house-wife accustomed to a life of privilege and money - to kick start the debate of how women from different backgrounds are judged by society.

As a result of writing Two Women, Martina Cole is Patron of Chelmsford Women’s Aid and in 2007 became an Ambassador for Gingerbread – the National Council for One Parent Families.

Two Women has been adapted by Patrick Prior and is directed by Theatre Royal Stratford East’s Associate Director Ryan Romain. They are joined by set and costume designer Yannis Thavoris; assistant director Antonio Ferrara; lighting designer Declan Randle; and sound designer Theo Holloway.

This production boasts an illustrious cast including Frances Albery (Hunter) Victoria Alcock (Bad Girls, Dr Who – Planet of the Dead, The Bill); Marc Bannerman (EastEnders, Hotel Babylon); Michael Bertenshaw (Aladdin – Theatre Royal Stratford East, Culshaw & Stephenson, Doctor Who); Sophie Cosson (Hearts and Minds – Khaayal Theatre Company, Tie A Yellow Ribbon – London Film Academy); Marcus Ellard (Come Dancing - Theatre Royal Stratford East); Sheryl Gannaway (The Bill, EastEnders); Laura Howard (Midsomer Murders, Look Back in Anger – Northern Stage); Cathy Murphy (House of Eliott, Extras, EastEnders), Alison Newman (Footballer’s Wives); and Sally Oliver (Emmerdale).

Two Women weaves a hard-hitting tale of betrayal, heartbreak, justice and redemption, full of twists and turns. Just like Martina’s books, this play will have you hooked from the very start.
