| Description | Seeds of Change, a lecture by Maria Thereza Alves 26th May 2009, 5.15 - 7pm The artist will present Seeds of Change, 2005, a project that deals with ‘ballast flora’, an area of botanical study that has been marginalised for bearing direct links with the slave trade. In the 18th Century, European ships travelling around the Americas would use earth and stones as ballast if their load wasn't heavy enough. Should they find profitable slaves along the way, they could readily dispose of the natural waste to make space for them on board. Back in the European harbours, they would dump the American soil on the land. In 2005, Alves started researching the locations of ballast waste sites, by notably reading through the logs of maritime trade companies in local archives and taking samples. The work resulting from this research which has taken place in a number of cities in France, the UK and Finland, has taken the form of collaborative projects with local inhabitants and gardeners. Alves has also produced a series of photographs, videos and texts which document the infiltration of foreign plants in the port cities she has been focusing on. Using the lecture format, Maria Thereza Alves will take us through her findings and the botanical legacy of colonialism.
