Title Jimmie Durham And Andrea Geyer: A Conversation
Type of event Lecture
Dates 29 May 2009
Special dates 5-7pm
Time 17:00
Description Of Cherokee origin and involved with the American Indian Movement as a political organiser through the 1970s, Jimmie Durham is an artist, poet and essayist. Until his move to Europe in 1994, his artistic production focused primarily on a critique of imperialism and segregation. In the past fifteen years, Durham’s work has become less autobiographical, and has adopted a critical approach to the knowledge systems and ideological frameworks that structure Western culture. His work often disrupts the seemingly stable relationship between architecture, monumentality and national narratives.

Andrea Geyer uses both fiction and documentary strategies in her image and text based works. She investigates historically evolved concepts such as national identity, gender and class in the context of the ongoing re-adjustment of cultural meanings and social memories in current politics. Recent works include "Spiral Lands," a photographic and textual historiography of the ongoing dispossession of lands from Indigenous people by colonization, governmentality and capitalist development, and "9 Scripts from a Nation at War" about the current war in Iraq.

Talking from experience and using specific projects to convey their preoccupations and practice, the two artists will be in conversation about their respective artistic engagement with issues of appropriation – of land, language and culture – and of the fabrication of history, resulting from colonialism and capitalist economy.
