Dates 22 June 2008
Time 14:15
Description Sunday 22nd June is the 60th Anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush to British shores, an important part of the history of multiculturalism in Britain. In celebration, Rich Mix is showing a small series of films on Sunday 22nd to reflect Black Britain then and now. There will also be a Q&A at 6.00pm after the final film.

Twilight City
2.15pm
Dir: Reece Auguiste, 52 mins
By 1989, the Conservative government was three years into a programme of wealth creation and urban redevelopment unparalleled in 20th century Britain. BAFC’s third work TwilightCity can be seen as the first essay-film to map the new London through an excavation of Docklands, the City, Lime House and the Isle of Dogs.

Who Needs A Heart
3.30pm
Dir: John Akomfrah, 78 mins
Who Needs a Heart is a largely silent movie whose soundtrack of Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, John Coltrane and the ritual music of the Llamas and Tibetan Monks of the Four Great Orders investigated the expressionist potential of music to create the conditions for the movement of images.

Tickets: £5.00 per film | Screen 3

Handsworth Songs
5.00pm
Dir: John Akomfrah, 60 mins
Handsworth Songs takes as its point of departure the civil disturbances of September and October 1985 in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in the urban centres of London. Running throughout Handsworth Songs is the idea that the riots were the outcome of a protracted suppression by British society of black presence

Our FREE In the Mix Jazz sessions with Tomorrow’s Warriors will also be on in our Bar from 2.00 – 5.00pm, so please join us at Rich Mix this Sunday 22nd and celebrating this important part of history.
