| Description | From February 2008 until November 2008 the Horniman Museum is holding a major exhibition showcasing a new collection of relatively unknown musical instruments from rural areas of India. The exhibition provides glimpses of the cultural, musical and linguistic diversity of the sub-continent, by exploring the music and musical instruments of communities that are representative of the four main language groups of India (Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman and Austroasiatic). The exhibition features the musical art forms as follows: temple musicians of rural Kerala musician-farmers among the Sora communities in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh fishing, farming and monastic communities on the island of Majuli in Assam farmers and artisans the Monpa peoples in the Himalayan mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, on the border with China hereditary singer-storytellers and farmers of Punjab Using the wealth of photos, videos, and audio recordings, each section of the exhibition will convey information about the geographical, social and cultural environments in which the musicians from the four different areas of India work and make music. Instruments from the historic collections of the museum are also incorporated in the exhibition, making connections between traditional music and the classical music of North and South India. The exhibition, together with its related series of events and community projects is supported by the Museums, Galleries and Archives Council’s Renaissance London initiative. |
