Description Arnold Schoenberg Verklarte Nacht
Igor Stravinsky Concerto for piano and wind instruments
INTERVAL
Ludwig Van Beethoven Symphony No.4

Ingo Metzmacher, conductor
Marc-Andre Hamelin, piano

Nestling between the riotous revolutions of the Third and Fifth Symphonies, Beethoven's Fourth is no less compelling; this is a mysterious but witty Symphony, often as urgent and vigorous as the Third and as insistent and engaging as the Fifth. Despite its title - which literally translates as 'Transfigured Night ' - there's no less clarity in Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht. From the man who gave birth to musical serialism, this is a remarkably melodic and Romantic-sounding work, its expressiveness and ultimate resolution making it a hit with audiences in 1903. Unsweetened by strings, Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments makes for a biting and earthy musical experience.

QEH at 6.15pm: 'Rivals with a Common Purpose?' Arnold Whittall places Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht and Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments in the context of broader 20th-century developments in which these composers played crucial roles. Admission free. There is no pre-concert event on Saturday 21st April.

Tickets: Prices: £35, £27, £20, £12, £6
